Therapy

Today, great efforts are made to create centers of education regarding diabetes with purpose to educate the patient in understanding the disease and to get tools for self-help.

Type 1 Diabetes.

Much of the therapy concerning the type 1 diabetics is circulating around the physiological insulin regimen with daily injections of insulin. Assessment of control, dosage adjustment and careful planning of diet and exercise are keywords to maintain a good quality of life with diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes

Obesity, inadequate quantity and quality of food, and a lack of physical activity are major risk factors for the development of type 2 diabetes. Weight management and physical activity are the basis of the treatment of type 2 diabetes. In those individuals with a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, small amounts of weight loss are enough to significantly reduce the risk.

Studies have shown that physical exercise training and diet are among the most powerful physiological interventions known to maintain or improve insulin sensitivity.

Besides diet restrictions and training, type 2 patients may need insulin tablets or injections. Furthermore, there is a wide range of anti-diabetica compounds such as:

  • Biguanides – that reduces insulin resistance and reduce hepatic glucose outcome
  • Sulphonylureas and Meglitinide analogues - that increase insulin secretion
  • Alfa-glukosidase inhibitors - that delay absorption of carbohydrate
  • Thiazolidinediones or glitazones – that reduce insulin resistance

The usage of these pharmaceuticals is increasing in the same rate as the epidemic of diabetes around the world and companies put in great efforts to develop better and better compounds.
